Weekly Review: Week 17

In our homeschool this week… we had a good school week but both of us are excited that now we are done until after the new year! We've been doing things a bit differently with our schedule. Besides our morning work (Bible, drill, recitation, math lesson, etc.), the rest of the work for the week is listed in two columns. To change things up a bit, instead of just working through them in order I let TJ choose anything she wanted to do in the first column. The only rule I had was that she couldn't choose the same subject twice in the same day. It worked really well - she liked having the independence of choosing what we would work on. It was a nice way to give our day a little variety.

Math - lots of work on place value review. We also did another step in spelling, two grammar lessons, and a lesson in Latin and French. TJ also did a chemistry experiment and we fit in our extras (health - Bill Nye video on fire safety, music - Beethoven's Wig 2, geography, drawing, and picture study).

We finally finished up The Story of the World 2 and will be moving on to book 3 after Christmas. We haven't really been doing any big projects with it so it's been easy to do two chapters a week. Each chapter is split into 2 parts so I read one section aloud each day. TJ does a narration for the first section and works on the map the next day. I order a bunch of books from the library and she chooses one per day (or takes a few days if the book is longer) as her assigned reading. She likes having a choice about what she has to read. If there is a project we want to do in one of the two chapters from that week then we do that on Fridays. It's been working well for us.

I’m reading… The Return of the Native. Really enjoying this book! TJ has finished reading How to Train your Dragon, See Inside a Galleon, Welcome to the Globe, and a pile of Rainbow Magic Fairy books. She has a few chapters left in Farmer Boy and will probably have that finished during our break.

I'm watching and listening... Christmas music!

I’m cooking… Christmas sweets - TJ and I have made a list of things we wanted to make.

We love How to Train your Dragon around here, too!

We'll be doing Latin in the 2nd grade -- fingers crossed.
